OCHS-Routledge Hindu Studies Series guidelines

We suggest a document of 4-8 pages which covers the following:

  1. Rationale: why this book now? What will make it timely, special, original, important?
  2. Contents list, with chapter headings and short summary of content, chapter by chapter; for edited books, please give details of contributors and their affiliations; length (no. of words) and number of tables, figures and illustrations, maps etc (if any).
  3. For books based on a thesis: your suggestions for transforming your thesis (narrow purpose, select readership) into a book (broader purpose, wider readership).
  4. Market – who is the book for, exactly?
  5. Competition: comparing and contrasting, showing where your work fits into and takes further the existing body of scholarship.
  6. Brief CV of yourself and any co-authors or co-editors.
  7. Title: this should be crisp, broaden the appeal of the manuscript as far as possible, and be explicit about the book’s subject. This is important so that, for example, anyone doing a computer search using just key words will find the book.
  8. Anticipated date for delivery of final script and disk.
  9. The names, affiliations and addresses of two academic referees whose comments on your proposal and script you would truly value and we would benefit from.
